Pope Saint Leo the Great Novena

Pray in honor of Pope Saint Leo the Great (c. 400–461), the defender of Christ’s true divinity and humanity and an outstanding pastoral teacher. The novena repeats a prayer specifically addressed to Saint Leo from the nineteenth-century Benedictine devotional work The Liturgical Year by Dom Prosper Guéranger. The English prayer below follows and moderately modernizes the historical prayer; it is not the unrelated general saint-novena form. This nine-day devotional use is arranged November 1–9 before his November 10 memorial. The 1870 original discusses politics and non-Christian peoples in nineteenth-century polemical language; this edition maintains the historical subjects without preserving all of that polemical phrasing.
